Biographical Note

Feodor Rojankovsky was born in Mitava, Russia, on December 24, 1891. His father, a high school administrator, encouraged his five children to become well educated and to express themselves artistically. Deciding to become a painter, Rojankovsky entered the Moscow Fine Arts Academy in 1912, but left two years later to serve as an infantry officer with the Russian army during World War I. He began making children's book illustrations for the Ukrainian Republic during the Russian Revolution, but was conscripted into the White Army in 1919 and soon became a prisoner-of-war in Poland.

After his release, Rojankovsky remained in Poland and worked as an art director for both a fashion magazine and a book publishing company. He next went to Paris and worked for an advertising agency, film studios, and publishing firms between 1927 and 1941. Rojankovsky produced his first children's book for a Western publisher- Daniel Boone (1931)-while in Paris and commenced a career as an illustrator. He immigrated to the United States after the German occupation of France in 1941. Rojankovsky received the Caldecott Medal in 1956 for Frog Went A-Courtin' edited by John Langstaff. He died in 1970.

Scope and Content Note

The Feodor Rojankovsky Papers consist of five watercolor illustrations for Daniel Boone: Historic Adventures of an American Hunter among the Indians (1931). Domino Press issued the book featuring Rojankovsky's lithographs simultaneously in French and English.
