Abstract: | The Robert McClung Papers contain research notes, manuscripts, typescripts, illustrations, dummies, galleys, correspondence, photographs, and greeting cards created and accumulated by Robert McClung between 1951 and 1998. His papers were created from his composition of twenty-one published books and his design of five greeting cards related to wildlife and conservation. |
Robert McClung was born in 1916 in Butler, Pennsylvania, to Frank and Mary (Goehring) McClung. His interest in animals began in early childhood with a collection of small native wildlife, and he became an especially enthusiastic collector of butterflies and moths. He began writing stories and drawing pictures of animals while in grade school and continued to do so through his college years. McClung majored in biology at Princeton, graduated in 1939, and became a copywriter for a New York advertising agency. During World War II he served as a crew member on a Navy destroyer and as a flier and later landing signal officer on aircraft carriers. After the war McClung took an adult extension course at New York University on creative writing for young people. The course was taught by Elizabeth Hamilton, the new editor-in-chief of Morrow Junior Books. McClung's nonfiction animal stories impressed her enough to offer him a book contract with Morrow.
In the meantime, McClung went to Cornell University on the GI Bill and received a master's degree in zoology. He worked for seven years at the Bronx Zoo, first as an assistant in the animal departments, later as Curator of Mammals and Birds. His love of animals prompted him to leave the zoo and devote himself full time to freelance writing of children's books and articles about animals, including later work as a staff writer and editor with the National Geographic Society.
Between 1948 and 1998 McClung published more than sixty-five books, fifty of which were published under the William Morrow imprint. The general style and format of his wildlife books remained constant. Each book followed the life cycle of a particular animal, describing its growth and development, habitat, food, mating habits, and natural predators. McClung wrote many of his earlier works for the six-to-ten-year-old reader. By the 1970s his work mirrored the growing conservation awareness by venturing into the life cycle of endangered animals such as brown pelicans, California grizzly bears, or big alligators. He wrote these later works for an eight-to-twelve-year-old audience. McClung self-illustrated the majority of his books, but several were illustrated by Lloyd Sandford, staff artist and McClung's co-worker at the Bronx Zoo.
In addition to the de Grummond Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi, McClung has donated original materials to the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota and to his alma mater, Princeton University. Robert McClung died at his home in Amherst, Massachusetts in June 2006. He is survived by his wife (and sometimes co-author), Gale, and their two sons, William Marshall and Thomas Cooper.

The Robert McClung Papers contain research notes, manuscripts, typescripts, illustrations, dummies, galleys, correspondence, photographs, and greeting cards created and accumulated by Robert McClung between 1951 and 1998. McClung's papers were created from his composition of twenty-one published books and five greeting cards. The material is organized into two series: books and printed cards.
The papers in the Books Series include research notes, manuscripts, typescripts, illustrations, dummies, galleys, correspondence, and photographs for twenty-one books published between 1951 and 1991. They are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each book is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known. The records illustrate McClung's complete process of creation for several titles, revealing the meticulous research he conducted for each book. The papers often contain correspondence with field experts and wildlife researchers as well as observation notes by McClung or other interested parties. For example, to aid his research on the cardinal for his book Redbird, McClung sent a mimeographed questionnaire to Amherst area residents who answered his newspaper advertisement about cardinal sightings. McClung used their collective reporting as empirical evidence on the red bird's life cycle.
The author commonly revised his typescripts as many as five or more times, incorporating recommendations from his wildlife associates and book editors. Pen and ink illustrations and color separations are included for most of his self-illustrated titles. Of particular interest are the illustrations for Scoop, Last of the Brown Pelicans. Illustrator Lloyd Sandford died in an automobile accident having completed only preliminary sketches for the book. McClung finished illustrating the work himself, using Sandford's sketches as his starting point.
The Printed Cards Series contains illustrations, color separations, and printed cards for five cards created by Robert McClung. The bulk of the material concerns the annual de Grummond Collection Christmas card McClung designed in 1985. The series also includes four small printed cards featuring McClung illustrations. The material is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.
