Abstract: Margaret O. Hyde is the author of numerous science and other non-fiction books for young adult readers. Her books range in topic from the natural world to modern social issues such as addiction, rape, child abuse, and divorce. The Margaret O. Hyde Papers contain typescripts, dummies, galleys, page proofs, folded and gathered sheets, and photographs created and accumulated by Margaret Hyde for 26 books published between 1954 and 1981.

Biographical Note

Margaret Oldroyd Hyde was born on February 18, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Gerald and Helen (Lerch) Oldroyd. After doing graduate work in zoology and psychology at Columbia University, she wanted to enter the medical field but turned to teaching because her family considered medicine an unsuitable field for a woman. She married Edwin Hyde just prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, and worked as a science consultant at the Columbia University Teachers College while he was away on active duty.

Her venture into children's literature began when she co-authored an elementary school science textbook with her Columbia advisor in 1947. Hyde continued to teach science education until her children grew older, at which time she left teaching to devote herself exclusively to writing and rearing her children. McGraw-Hill accepted her first nonfiction manuscript, Flight Today and Tomorrow (1953), and continued assigning her new projects or negotiating for her own suggested topics. In thirty years Hyde generated more than sixty young adult books on the social and biological sciences, addressing topics as diverse as computers, divorce, the brain, juvenile justice, addiction, and AIDS. She recently collaborated with her sons Bruce and Lawrence on several books, dividing the research and writing duties. Edwin and Margaret Hyde currently live in Vermont.

Scope and Content Note

The Margaret O. Hyde Papers contain typescripts, dummies, galleys, page proofs, folded and gathered sheets, and photographs created and accumulated by Margaret Hyde between 1954 and 1981. Hyde's papers were created from her composition of 26 published books, four of which were published in multiple editions. The material is organized into a single series for books.

The Books Series largely consists of typescripts, galleys, dummies, and page proofs for 26 books. Four of these titles include material for multiple editions. Hyde apparently generated several typescripts for each book, considering that many typescripts were a combination of corrected or photocopied pages from previous drafts and newly created typescript pages. Similarly, Hyde created dummies for later editions of books by pasting pages cut from previous editions onto pieces of large paper for further editing. She also made dummies by cutting segments of text from galley sheets and pasted them onto layout sheets or large pieces of paper. The papers in the Books Series are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each book is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.
