Abstract: Syd Hoff is one of the foremost and prolific cartoonists in the United States, a regular contributor to newspapers, magazines, and children's literature. He is the author and illustrator of such early-reader children's classics as Danny and the Dinosaur, Sammy the Seal, and Grizzwold. The Syd Hoff Papers contain book dummies, typescripts, galleys, illustrations, and color separations related to forty-six books published between 1958 and 1993. They also include more than 1700 cartoons drawn for newspapers and magazines between 1946 and 1977.

Biographical Note

Born in New York City in 1912, Syd Hoff attended New York City public schools and studied fine art at the city's Academy of Design. He sold his first cartoon to The New Yorker at age eighteen, deciding then and there to give up serious painting for cartooning. He eventually sold many cartoons to The New Yorker, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and other magazines. Before his twenty-first birthday, Hoff was drawing the daily syndicated comic strip, "Tuffy," which appeared in more than 800 newspapers worldwide for ten years. In 1958 he began what would become an almost twenty-year project, creating a daily one-panel cartoon, "Laugh It Off," which was syndicated by King Features in hundreds of newspapers.

Hoff and his wife, Dora, had two daughters, Susan and Bonnie. Although he read all the classic children's literature to his daughters, the girls much preferred the stories he made up himself and encouraged him to draw and publish stories of his own. His earliest attempts at publication were less than successful, but when one of his daughters was stricken with a physically debilitating condition, Hoff drew some pictures to help take her mind off her physical therapy. These pictures eventually formed the basis of Danny and the Dinosaur, one of his earliest and best-loved books, a classic of children's literature.

Hoff drew inspiration for most of his books and cartoons from the New York neighborhoods where he grew up. Simplicity is one of the most distinguishing features of his drawing style. Almost any literate American born between 1940 and 1980 would recognize a Hoff cartoon immediately, even if they could not name the illustrator. Between the "Tuffy" cartoon strip and the "Laugh It Off" single-panel cartoons, Hoff illustrations appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines worldwide between 1941 and 1977. He himself also starred in a brief series of television shows in the 1950s, "Tales of Hoff," in which he told a story and drew cartoons while on the air.

In later years, Hoff made personal appearances at elementary schools to discuss his life and books, and to teach children that anyone can draw, no matter their artistic ability. He passed away at his home in Miami Beach, Florida on May 12, 2004. He was 91.

Scope and Content Note

The Syd Hoff Papers contain book dummies, typescripts, galleys, illustrations, and color separations related to forty-six fiction and non-fiction works created or accumulated by Hoff. The material also includes more than 1700 cartoons drawn for newspapers and magazines, as well as publicity information and correspondence between Hoff and the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. The papers are organized into three series: books, cartoons, and assorted materials.

The material in the books series includes book dummies, typescripts, galleys, original illustrations, and color separations for forty-six books published between 1958 and 1993. Hoff wrote and illustrated books mostly for early readers, publishing many titles in the Harper Books "I Can Read" series for children aged four to eight. Eleven "I Can Read" books are represented in the Syd Hoff Papers, including press sheets for a reprint of his most successful book, Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in the series boast complete artwork, including both preliminary and final illustrations, and occasionally a book dummy with rough pen or pencil sketches. Hoff's favorite medium appeared to be ink, but the preliminary illustrations for many works are in watercolor. The non-fiction works represented in the Hoff Papers are joke books and several books teaching cartoon drawing to children. Two works of fiction, Gentleman Jim and the Great John L and Boss Tweed and the Man Who Drew Him, were based on true characters. The material for the latter work is especially interesting because its many typescript versions reveal Hoff's difficulties in simplifying the story for younger readers. The papers in the book series are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each title is arranged in order of creation when known.

The papers in the cartoon series are organized into two subseries: King Features Syndicate and magazines. The King Features Syndicate material consists of more than 1700 single-panel ink cartoons created primarily for "Laugh It Off," a daily cartoon drawn for newspapers. The panels date from 1950 to 1977, including those King Features drawings that predate the "Laugh It Off" debut in 1958, but the bulk of the panels date from 1963 to 1971. The cartoons cover a wide variety of subjects but most often deal with the relationship between the sexes. The cartoons are an outstanding reflection of popular culture, reinforcing the sexual stereotypes of their day. They are arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.

The papers in the magazine subseries contain thirty-four large single and multi-panel ink and watercolor illustrations made for publication in several national magazines. The papers are arranged alphabetically by title of publication and the material for each title is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.

The assorted materials series consists of a 1982 article about Hoff from the San Mateo (California) Times, a promotional brochure about the author, a magazine advertisement, and correspondence between Hoff and the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. The pieces of correspondence were selected and photocopied from the correspondence file of the de Grummond Collection because they offer insight into Hoff's personality or work. They are arranged chronologically.
