Abstract: The Daniel S. Halacy, Jr. Papers contain manuscripts, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, illustrations, photographs, and correspondence created and accumulated by Halacy between 1965 and 1978. His papers were created from his composition of 46 published books. Halacy wrote nonfiction books on aviation, computers, and other subjects in science and technology, as well as adventure fiction for boys.

Biographical Note

Daniel S. Halacy, Jr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 16, 1919, to Daniel Stephen and Pearl (Edwards) Halacy. The son of a sailor in the U.S. Navy, Halacy grew up in Charleston, South Carolina; Newport, Rhode Island; and San Diego, California. He became interested in both writing and aviation as a boy--two interests he would pursue for the rest of his life. Halacy worked at a variety of jobs after graduating from San Diego High School, including a position in an airplane manufacturing company. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, where he served as a navigator until his discharge in March 1946. Halacy found work in the field of aircraft construction after the war, and married Beth Ann DeBolt in June 1947. Around this time, he also began selling short stories and light verse to magazines.

Halacy was drafted for the Korean War in 1951, and flew 31 combat missions with a B-29 crew as an electronics specialist. Upon returning from Korea, he and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he received an A.A. degree in English from Phoenix College in 1956. Halacy published his first children's book, Star for a Compass, while still in school. He earned a B.A. degree in English from Arizona State College in 1957 and worked as a technical writer for aerospace companies after his graduation. Halacy gained enough success as an author to become a freelance writer in 1962. In all, he wrote 78 nonfiction books on aviation, computers, and other subjects in science and technology, as well as adventure fiction for boys. Halacy was an Arizona state senator from 1967 to 1970, and worked for the Solar Energy Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, from 1979 to 1984. He had become interested in solar energy while living in Phoenix, and was a fervent activist for the technology.

Daniel S. Halacy, Jr. died on March 20, 2002.

Scope and Content Note

The Daniel S. Halacy Jr. Papers contain manuscripts, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, illustrations, photographs, and correspondence created and accumulated by Daniel S. Halacy Jr. between 1965 and 1978. Halacy's papers were created from his composition of 46 published books and his correspondence with the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. The material is organized into two series: Books and Correspondence.

The Books Series consists of manuscripts, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, illustrations, photographs, and correspondence for 46 books published between 1965 and 1978. The papers in the series are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each book is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known. The quantity of material for specific titles varies tremendously, from a single typescript to a huge assortment of typescripts, galleys, page proofs, and dummies. Following departmental custom, the processor has numbered each typescript and proof by order of creation (first, second, third, etc.). Furthermore, Halacy created many of his early typescripts by composing text, cutting out certain passages onto strips of paper, arranging these passages relative to others, and then stapling the rearranged strips to other (usually blank) pages. These staples have been left in place to prevent these strips from accidentally coming out of place.

The container listing offers detailed descriptions of the holdings for each title and information on the material's process of creation may be gleaned easily from the container listing for each book. However, some additional explanation is needed to understand the material for one title. The first typescript for 33 Miles a Minute!: The Story of Air Transport (1966) was composed largely on strips of paper that Halacy stapled to the backs of discarded typescript pages for books that already had been published. These staples have been left in place to prevent these strips from accidentally coming out of place. Although several previous titles are represented in fragments, the typescript made use of a sizeable number of discarded pages for Father of Supersonic Flight: Theodor von Karman (1965).

The pieces of correspondence with the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection were selected and photocopied from the correspondence file of the de Grummond Collection, because they provide information on Halacy's literary and political careers. They span the years 1966 to 1975, and are arranged chronologically.
