Biographical Sketch:

Patricia Clapp was born on June 9, 1912 in Boston. She attended Columbia University for two years, and married Edward della Torre Cone in 1933, though she wrote under her maiden name. The couple had three children together. Ms. Clapp became involved with community theater after her marriage. She began writing plays for children when she was asked to produce a play for her daughters' Girl Scout troop. After writing several plays for community theater groups, she submitted one to a publisher in 1956, who accepted it.

For the next decade, she published numerous plays, before undertaking her first book in 1968. That year, she published Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth , which won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. It was also a runner-up for the National Book Award. She has written several other works of historical fiction, mostly focusing on eras of American history as seen through the eyes of girls and young women. In 1982, Witches' Children was named the American Library Association Best Young Adult Book.
