Biographical Sketch:

Madye Lee Chastain was born on December 15, 1908 in Texarkana, Texas. She married Kurt Stoessel, a fellow artist, in 1936, and had one child. She studied art at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and Grand Central Art School in New York. She also studied at Columbia University. She worked as a portrait artist from 1932 to 1938. Ms. Chastain has written and illustrated children's books since 1945. Her books are episodic, humorous adventure stories for middle readers. They are frequently set in small towns or farms. Scope and Content:

The collection contains material for five titles. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created. Holdings for Emmy Keeps a Promise, Fripsey Fun, and Steamboat South include one illustration for each title. For Magic Island and Plippen's Palace , there is a single typescript page for each title.
