She studied art at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and Grand Central Art School in New York. She also studied at Columbia University. She worked as a portrait artist from 1932 to 1938. Ms. Chastain has written and illustrated children's books since 1945. Her books are episodic, humorous adventure stories for middle readers. They are frequently set in small towns or farms.
