How
can I find out when a McLouglin book was published? There
is no date on this book.
Items
published by the McLoughlin Brothers are often undated. For
this reason, publication dates must be approximated based
on the place of publication. To help you in dating your McLoughlin
item, one of our staff catalogers, Billie Hackney, used the
American Antiquarian Society's online catalog to create the
following list:
1852-1853
John McLoughlin No. 3 Tyron Row, NYC
1854-1858 John McLoughlin 24 Beekman St., NYC
1858-1862 McLoughlin Brothers 24 Beekman St., NYC
1863-1870 McLoughlin Brothers 30 Beekman St., NYC
1871-1886 McLoughlin Brothers 71 & 73 Duane St., NYC
1886-189? McLoughlin Brothers 623 Broadway, NYC
1898-1919 McLoughlin Brothers 890 Broadway, NYC
1920-1929 McLoughlin Brothers Springfield, Mass., No M/B logo
1930-196? McLoughlin Brothers Springfield Mass., with M/B
logo
How
can I find out what my McLoughlin book or print is worth?
We do not have expertise in appraising items and, therefore,
can only refer you to other sources.
For
books: Check with an out-of-print book dealer. To assist
you in locating one close to your home, see our list
of out-of-print book dealers who specialize in children's
books. You can also try www.bookfinder.com.
If there are other books with the same title and edition for
sale, you can compare the description of the book with yours.
Naturally, the condition of the book will either add to or
subtract from its market value.
For
prints: We suggest finding a Fine Arts dealer close to
your home to ask. If they cannot appraise your print, they
might be able to refer you to someone who can.
How
can I find out more information about the McLoughlin Brothers
publishing company?
Surprisingly,
very little has been written about the McLoughlin Brothers
Company. The only reference we are aware of is a short article
by Michael Patrick Hearn, "McLoughlin Brothers, 1928-1978,"
printed in Original Wood Blocks from the Archives of McLoughlin
Brothers, Publishers, New York (1978) by Justin Schiller.
Hearn's article was later published as McLoughlin Brothers,
1928-1978 (New York:J. G. Shiller, 1980). Much of the
information in that booklet is contained in an article
about Mr. Shiller's gift which is available online. Also
see the Finding Aid
for our McLoughlin materials.
How
Many Books with This Title Were Published?
To our
knowledge there is no reference that documents the "run,"
or number of books printed for each McLoughlin title/edition.
Again, perhaps, a rare book dealer will have a better sense
of this given the number of books they have come across in
their business.
