Within
the published book holdings of the de Grummond Collection
are more than 550 books written by George Alfred Henty (1832-1902),
over 100 of which are in the online
catalog. The books are from the collection of Robert
L. Dartt, author of G.A. Henty: A Bibliography, listing
the numerous boys' adventure books and magazine stories
written by the prolific British author.
Many of the books are first editions, published by Blackie
(London) and Scribner's (New York), and have cloth bindings
with pictorial covers. Some of the rarer and more important
titles include Cuthbert Hartington, The Lost Heir, The
Ranch in the Valley, The Plague Ship, Highland Chief, Redskins
and Colonists, and In the Days of the Mutiny.
Also included is a complete run of The Union Jack
(1880-1883), the weekly boys' magazine edited by Henty.
Frequent contributors to The Union Jack were George
Manville Fenn, Jules Verne, R.M. Ballantyne, and W.H.G.
Kingston, who was also the editor for the first half of
1880.
Holdings of the Henty Society Bulletin from 1984-1992, a
listing of Henty titles found in the Renier Collection of
Historic and Contemporary Children's Books, and Guy Arnold's
biography of Henty, Held Fast for England, round out the
collection. The Henty Society can be reached at:
