Abstract: This collection contains articles, pamphlets, paper currency, newspapers, images and other materials pertaining to the Civil War and its Centennial celebration. The collection also contains a few items regarding the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia, during the Revolutionary War.

Historical Sketch

Over time, a profusion of items documenting the Civil War have been preserved and/or created. As the 100 th Anniversary of the Civil War approached, several states formed Centennial Commissions to commemorate the event, and more documents were created or reprinted for the occasion. Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, Texas and Virginia were among the states that contributed to the plethora of materials generated during the war, after the war, and in observance of the centennial.

Contents of the Collection

Scope and Content Note

The Civil War History Collection contains articles and pamphlets relating to the Civil War, special edition newspapers, and maps recording troop movements during the Battle of Shiloh and the marches of Stonewall Jackson. Also in the collection are images and prints of Civil War personalities such as Jefferson Davis, Gen. Braxton Bragg, Gen. J. E. Johnston and others. Items of additional interest include Confederate currency and a proclamation concerning Texas' secession from the Union. Non-Civil War materials in the collection include programs and admission tickets for the Yorktown, Virginia, Centennial of Lord Cornwallis's surrender during the Revolutionary War.
