Biographical/Historical Sketch:

Dr. John R. Rachal is a professor of Adult Education at The University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Rachal has taught at USM since 1980 where he attained full-professorship in 1989. He received his M.A. in English (1973) and Ed.D (1979) in Adult and Community College Education from North Carolina State University. Dr. Rachal has been the recipient of numerous awards including two Imogene Okes Awards for Outstanding Research in Adult Education (2004, 1999).

Scope and Content:

The collection contains a reprint of Dr. John R. Rachal’s article entitled “We’ll Never Turn Back: Adult Education and the Struggle for Citizenship in Mississippi’s Freedom Summer” (American Educational Research Journal, Summer 1998). This article received the Imogene Okes Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Education at the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education conference in October 1999. The article discusses the role of Freedom Schools and adult education in the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project of 1964.

This article was part of Dr. Rachal’s Freedom Summer research project that was supported by a grant from The University of Southern Mississippi. For this project, Dr. Rachal also conducted twelve interviews that are available from the Center of Oral History and Cultural Heritage at USM. The journal in which the article was originally printed is available in the Cook Library, call number L11 .A66.
