Biographical/Historical Sketch: Dr. George William Chilcoat earned three academic degrees from Arizona State University (ASU). In 1972, he received a bachelor of arts (BA) in Latin American studies, history and political science, in 1975 a master of education (ME) in secondary education, Latin American history, and in 1983 a doctoral degree (Ed.D.) in secondary education, curriculum and instruction, social studies education. Dr. Chilcoat's credentials as an educator are impressive. From 1975 - 1985 he taught American History, American Government and Free Enterprise at Greenway High School in Glendale, Arizona. During that time, he also taught night school classes for at-risk and gifted students. He served as assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1985 - 1989, and began his career at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1989, as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor at BYU in 1991, was granted tenure in 1993, and became full professor for the Department of Teacher Education in 1998. This collection consists of seven photocopied articles about Mississippi Freedom Schools published in scholarly education journals between 1994 and 1999. The articles were co-authored by Dr. George W. Chilcoat, of Brigham Young University, and Professor Jerry A. Ligon, of Eastern Illinois University. The articles are arranged chronologically. The cover page from The Social Studies, a journal in which one of the articles was published, displays a Herbert Randall Freedom Summer photograph.
