Biographical/Historical Sketch: On March 2 and 23, 1867, the United States Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts, and by those acts the Fourth Military District, consisting of Mississippi and Arkansas, was established. General Edward Otho Cresup Ord assumed military control of the district on March 26, 1867. The states operated under military rule until February 26, 1870, when General Orders No. 25 was issued, dissolving the Fourth Military District. This document is a printed copy of General Orders No. 25 issued by the Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office in Washington, D.C., on February 26, 1870, by command of General Sherman. There are three sections within the text: (I) reports that the senators and representatives from Mississippi have been admitted to Congress; (II) attaches officers and troops within Mississippi, by presidential order, to the Department of the Cumberland; and (III) directs the Fourth Military District commander to complete the records of the District and send them to the Adjutant General of the Army. The document is also issued under the direction of the Adjutant General, E. D. Townsend. |
