Biographical/Historical Sketch:

Henry Watkins Allen (1820-1866) was a native of Prince Edward County, Virginia. A graduate of Marion College in Missouri, he came to Mississippi by 1840 when he established a school at Grand Gulf. Allen was well-known as a planter in Mississippi and Louisiana and served a term in the legislature of both states. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and was first elected lieutenant colonel and later colonel of the 4th Louisiana Infantry. Allen served for a brief period as military governor at Jackson, Mississippi, and on August 19, 1863, he was appointed brigadier general. He was elected governor of Louisiana and served during the last year of the war; with his accomplishment in improving the economy of the Trans-Mississippi Department, Allen is considered one of the best Confederate administrators.
