Biographical/Historical Sketch:

Paul L. Gaston was a Hattiesburg, Mississippi, insurance agent and businessman. His general insurance office was located in the Ross Building, Room 404, in 1921 and his home was at 111 Bay Street. Although the exact dates of the founding and termination of Gaston's insurance business are not known, his office was in operation by 1921; by 1941 the agency was listed as Gaston and Gaston but in 1944 the business was no longer included in the Hattiesburg City Directory.

Gaston was also part-owner of two brick manufacturing companies, the Riverside Brick and Manufacturing Company and the Hammond-Baton Rouge Brick Company. The Riverside plant was located in Hattiesburg, and Gaston was its secretary-treasurer from approximately 1904 until it was sold in 1927. The Hammond-Baton Rouge Brick Company was built in Baptist, Louisiana, in 1920.

It is not known when Gaston ended his association with this plant, but it continued to be partly owned by the Gaston family through the 1970's.

Scope and Content:

This journal (1931-1935) from Paul L. Gaston's Hattiesburg, Mississippi, insurance agency contains a monthly record for each insurance company Gaston represented. These records include the names of his clients, a description of the property insured, the amount of the insurance, and the premiums paid. Significantly, the descriptions sometimes include addresses of the insured property.
