Series II, Sub-Series 2: Campaign Materials , Boxes 35 - 47:
Paul B. Johnson, Jr. waged his first campaign for governor of Mississippi in 1947. He was defeated by Fielding Wright. In 1951, Johnson was one of eight candidates vying for governor, but was defeated in the second primary by Hugh White. Mr. Johnson's third campaign for governor was in 1955, at which time he was defeated by J. P. Coleman, in the second primary. In 1959, Johnson ran for, and was elected to, the office of lieutenant governor. Then in 1963, on his fourth try, he was elected governor. Materials in this sub-group reflect all of the foregoing campaigns, but the 1963 campaign is more thoroughly documented than the others.
Prohibited by the Mississippi Constitution from succeeding himself as governor, Mr. Johnson ran for the office of lieutenant governor in 1967, but was defeated by Charles L. Sullivan. Materials that document the 1967 campaign are also in this sub-series. |
