Series I, Sub-Series 3: Dorothy Power Johnson and Family, Boxes 23 - 31:
Dorothy (Dot) Power Johnson was a native of Red Bank, Mississippi, in Marshall County. She met Paul B. Johnson, Jr. at the University of Mississippi, where she was a campus beauty during the 1937-1938 school year. Dot and Paul were married in February 1941, in the parlor of the Governor's Mansion in Jackson during Paul B. Johnson, Sr.'s gubernatorial administration. They lived in the Jackson area until Paul left for military service in the Marines. After the war, they made their home in Hattiesburg. Materials in this sub-series document Dot Johnson's activities in local clubs, Parkway Heights Methodist Church, and her husband's 1963 gubernatorial campaign. Also included are biographical information, personal and family papers, recipes and homemaking materials, financial records, correspondence, and materials regarding Mrs. Johnson's official activities as Mississippi's First Lady. |
