Biographical/Historical Sketch:

Little biographical information is available on M. Blake. He is not enumerated in the 1820, 1830 or 1840 census of the State of Mississippi.

William Pinckney Montgomery was a native of South Carolina who moved with his parents to Adams County, Mississippi, in the early 1800's. His wife was Catherine Cameron, a native of North Carolina. William P. and Catherine were the parents of nine children. In the 1830's William P. and others moved to Washington County, Mississippi, in the area identified as "Batchelor's Bend" on the Mississippi River.

Scope and Content:

A letter from M. Blake to William P. Montgomery regarding the sale of Blake's land in Washington County near the present town of Greenville, Mississippi. Montgomery had written Blake on December 4, 1836, offering to buy the tracts totaling 1925 90/100 acres. Blake authorizes John T. McMurran of Natchez to act as his attorney and expects equal annual payments from Montgomery on March 1, 1837, 1838, and 1839. He includes a letter to McMurran stating the locations of the tracts and provides a hand drawn map on which the tracts are marked.
