In addition, series one contains thirteen photographs (including an 8 x 10 portrait of L.E. Faulkner), and a copy of Mr. Faulkner's play "Young Citizens to the Rescue".

Folder titles seldom reflect the entire contents of files, therefore, it is recommended that the File Digest be used in conjunction with the container list. The Digest lists each file by number, followed by its box and folder location and a brief description of the file's contents. At the end of the Digest is a list of loose materials found in the collection.

Subseries I. General correspondence in this series gives some indication of the degree of Faulkner's involvement in community, state, and national affairs. Among the individuals with whom he corresponded between 1928 and 1960 were Hattiesburg mayors, Moran Pope and R.T. Carlisle, Senator John Stennis, Congressman William Colmer, Forrest County sheriff Ford Vance, Dr. R.C. Cook, Judge Tom Brady, Jr., and Fenwick L. Peck (president of U.S. Lumber Co.). Topics range from Herbert Hoover's 1928 campaign for president, to Sunday stock car racing in Hattiesburg in 1956.

Subseries II. The personal bills and receipts file provides examples of the types of businesses with which Faulkner dealt between 1936 and 1937. A letter to Samuel Spiegel, Inc. (6-4-36), in which he questions a $10.00 charge for repairing his daughter's fur coat, provides a sterling example of Mr. Faulkner's frugal nature.

Subseries III. One of the more unique files in this series concerns construction of Faulkner's French Renaissance mansion at 312 Sixth Avenue in Hattiesburg. The home was built between 1925 and 1926, and at this writing, is owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Bobby L. Chain. This file, more than any other, demonstrates Faulkner's meticulous attention to detail, as it discusses various phases of construction and interior decoration.

Subseries IV. Records of Mr. Faulkner's association with the Boy Scouts deal primarily with fund raising efforts in 1930. Included are lists of contributors and several vintage 1930 leaflets published by the Boy Scouts of America.

Subseries V. The Chamber of Commerce file touches on a kaleidoscope of topics affecting Hattiesburg and its economy between 1928 and 1930, from securing new industries and building primary roads, to the morality and legality of Sunday movies.

Subseries VI. The income tax file contains a significant amount of correspondence with Eugene Fly of the Internal Revenue Service in Jackson, Mississippi, as well as information concerning Faulkner's earnings and tax liabilities between 1944 and 1950.

Subseries VII. The personal donations file covers the period 1936 to 1956, and indicates that the Faulkners gave often and generously to a variety of charitable organizations.

Subseries VIII. Much of the correspondence in the Faulkner Concrete Pipe Company file is with company vice president, George B. Denham. Employee wages and benefits, labor disputes, company expansion, dividends, capital improvements, and personality clashes among employees are among the topics discussed.

Subseries IX. The YMCA records deal primarily with fund-raising, in which Faulkner was involved between 1925 and 1939.

Subseries X. The United States Lumber Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was the parent company of both the Mississippi Central Railroad Company and the J.J. Newman Lumber Company, and the Faulkner family owned a substantial amount of U.S. Lumber stock. The file consists of minutes of stockholders meetings, monthly statements of earnings, annual reports, and correspondence concerning stocks and dividends.

Subseries XI. The Hattiesburg Boys Brotherhood file contains a wealth of information about the organization and its activities for underprivileged boys between 1939 and 1941, and includes correspondence with the club's Director, Captain G.C. Black.

Subseries XII. "Report for Business Executives" is a weekly publication containing news of interest to businessmen, presented from the Washington, D.C. point of view. The file consists of 1942 and 1943 issues of the pamphlet.

Subseries XIII. The most significant item in the Mississippi Central Railroad file is a set of timetables from 1902-1963 (does not contain all years). Timetables 1 - 7 (1903-1903) bear the name, Pearl and Leaf River Railroad, which was the original name of the rail line. Other items include a certificate of membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, ink blotters, business cards, and a list of curves between Hattiesburg and Natchez.

Subseries XIV. Miscellaneous files includes annual reports of the Forrest Hotel Corporation (1930-1932) and papers written by Mary Elizabeth Faulkner while she was a student at Hollins College in Virginia (1933-1934).

SERIES II: POLITICAL FILES (ca. 1942-1959)

Series II contains records of Faulkner's mail campaign to preserve free enterprise and constitutional government. Mr. Faulkner often said that he was "born a Republican, and never voted for (Franklin) Roosevelt or (Harry) Truman", and as might be expected, materials in these files are of a decidedly conservative nature. The primary goal of the campaign was to discredit and dismantle the "New Deal", which Faulkner saw as socialistic. To that end, he used business and Rotary Club connections to circulate massive amounts of anti-New Deal materials nationwide. The series has been divided into seven subseries:

I. Correspondence (1942-1960)
II. "Bill Smith Letters" (1943-1959)
III. The Federal Government (1944-1959)
IV. Committee for Constitutional Government (1943-1956)
V. National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People, Legal Defense and Educational Fund (1954-1960)
VI. Articles and Speeches (1939-1956)
VII. Publications (1943-1960)

Subseries I. Subseries I contains correspondence with numerous individuals throughout the country, indicating a broad base of support for Faulkner's views. However, there are also a significant number of dissenting letters in the collection. Among those with whom Faulkner corresponded are N.L. Campbell, editor of The Railroad Journal; Eric Johnston, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Indiana Congressman, Samuel B. Pettengill; various company executives; and a fifteen year old boy in Chicago named Robert Andrews.

Subseries II. One of the mainstays of the campaign was the "Bill Smith Letters", a series of eighteen letters in which Bill Smith represents the average American working man. The letters were written by Mr. Faulkner to enlighten working men on the virtues of free enterprise. They were printed in leaflet form and offered free of charge to business leaders throughout the country for distribution among their employees. The subseries contains copies of each letter, plus related correspondence indicating that the letters were generally well-received.

Subseries III. The Federal Government subseries contains correspondence, newsclippings, and reports on such diverse topics as Secretary of Commerce Henry A. Wallace; Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes; President Roosevelt's 1945 state of the union address; the House Committee on Un-American Activities; the Office of Price Administration; President Truman and the Marshall Plan; and a bill to provide assistance to Greece and Turkey.

Subseries IV. The Committee for Constitutional Government was founded in 1937 by newspaper magnate, Frank Gannett, to counter presidential powers assumed by Franklin Roosevelt. Correspondence in this file deals chiefly with fundraising and distribution of Committee materials. Other items in the file are copies of the Committee's bi-weekly newsletter "Paul Revere Messages"; news releases entitled "Spotlight for the Nation"; a pamphlet entitled "Needed Now - Capacity for Leadership, Courage to Lead", which relates the history of the Committee; and a copy of For Americans Only, by Samuel B. Pettengill, which compares the New Deal to the socialism of Hitler's Germany.

Subseries V. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund was exempted from federal income taxes on the ground that it was a charitable organization. However, Faulkner and others felt that its funds were being used for political purposes, and launched a campaign to have the exemption revoked. Much of the correspondence in this file is with Mississippi's congressional delegation and the U.S. Treasury Department. Other correspondents are FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover; Mississippi White Citizens Council Director, Robert Patterson; Governor Hugh White of Mississippi; Judge Tom Brady, author of Black Monday; and Attorneys General John Patterson of Alabama and Eugene Cook of Georgia.

Subseries VI. Articles and speeches in Series II defend America's free enterprise system and warn of the dangers of socialism and communism. Many of the speeches were written by Mr. Faulkner, and delivered before various civic clubs. Examples of Faulkner's speeches are "We are on the Last Mile to Collectivism"; "Our Storehouse of Freedom is being Robbed"; and "The American Republic is being Liquidated." Articles and speeches by others include "Case Against the New Deal" by former Mississippi governor, Mike Conner; "The New Deal and the New Slavery" by Clayton Rand; "We Are on the Road to Bankruptcy by Senator Harry F. Byrd; and "Interposition: The Barrier Against Tyranny", a response Brown v. Board of Education by Mississippi Congressman, John Bell Williams.

Subseries VII. Examples of publications in this series are "Four Freedoms on the Homefront"; "W. Lee O'Daniel News"; "Kiplinger Washington Letter"; "Friends of the Public Schools"; "Closer Ups of the World's Trends" by Upton Close; and "Counterattack - Facts to Combat Communism."

SERIES III: ECCLESIASTICAL FILES (ca. 1917, 1945-1960)

Materials in series III document Mr. Faulkner's efforts to effect withdrawal of the Southern Presbyterian Church from the World, Federal, and National Councils of Churches, and to prevent a merger of the Northern and Southern Presbyterian Churches. Faulkner's devotion to the Southern Presbyterian Church and his determination to protect its autonomy resound loud and clear in these files, as does his unwavering opposition to communism and socialism. Mr. Faulkner's method of operation was to establish contact with officers and elders in the eighty-seven Presbyteries of the Southern Presbyterian Church. He would then enlist their aid in circulating materials to individual church members, which would enlighten them concerning the activities and objectives of the World, Federal, and National Councils of Churches. Other materials pointed out the disadvantages of merging with the Northern Presbyterian Church. The series is divided into seven subseries:

I. World Council of Churches (1950-1956)
II. Federal Council of Churches (1926-1959)
III. National Council of Churches (1950-1960)
IV. The Presbyterian Church (1946-1960)
V. Articles and Speeches (1947-1957)
VI. Publications (1954-1960)
VII. Correspondence (1917, 1944-1960)

Subseries I. Many of the materials in the World Council of Churches (WCC) file deal with the history of the organization and the 1954 WCC Assembly held in Evanston, Indiana. A series of letters to and from the White House and the U.S. State Department address the issue of admitting Assembly delegates from iron curtain countries to the United States.

Subseries II. Faulkner's objections to the Federal Council of Churches (FCC) and its successor, the National Council of Churches (NCC) stemmed largely from perceived modernistic and socialistic trends, and the organizations' stance favoring racial integration. The FCC subseries contains numerous examples of pamphlets used in Faulkner's ongoing battle against that organization. Topics treated in the pamphlets include merging the Presbyterian churches; withdrawal from the FCC; race relations; socialism and modernism; communism and the church; government and free enterprise; and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Also in this subseries are correspondence, lists of individuals to whom materials were mailed, and copies of the FCC bulletin "Information Service."

Subseries III. The NCC subseries consists largely of correspondence, newsclippings, pamphlets, and mailing lists which contain vast amounts of information concerning the organization and Mr. Faulkner's campaign against it. Correspondence indicates that Faulkner led an attempt to have the NCC's tax exempt status revoked on the ground that it was promoting a political agenda. Of particular interest are a booklet of lectures by Rev. W.H. Lewis of Meridian, Mississippi discussing racial problems in the South, and a pamphlet published by the NCC entitled "Plain Facts" which refutes charges of communist sympathies leveled at the organization.

Subseries IV. The Presbyterian Church subseries consists primarily of Mr. Faulkner's correspondence with officials in the 87 Presbyteries of the Southern Presbyterian Church. Also included are files concerning the 88th - 92nd General Assemblies and lists of commissioners and alternates to the 1949-1957 General Assemblies.

Subseries V. Most of the articles and speeches in this subseries were written by Mr. Faulkner, and focus on organic union of the Presbyterian churches and withdrawal from the WCC, FCC, and NCC. Many of the articles were published in the Southern Presbyterian Journal and the Hattiesburg American.

Subseries VI. The publications subseries consists of magazines and pamphlets generated by the American Bible Society, Belhaven College, the Christian Crusade, Defender Magazine, the Methodist and Presbyterian churches, and a group of miscellaneous leaflets pertaining to religion. Also included is a collection of French Camp Academy's newsletter, "Here's the news" (1957-1960). French Camp Academy was a private school for white children, to which Faulkner was a regular contributor.

Subseries VII. Correspondence in Series III is with such personages as Dr. Carl McIntire, editor of The Christian Beacon; Dr. Henry B. Dendy, editor of The Southern Presbyterian Journal; and Major Edgar C. Bundy of the Church League of America. One of the more intriguing files concerns Dr. Nels F.S. Ferre, professor of philosophical theology at Vanderbilt University. An article in the October 8, 1953 issue of The Christian Beacon charged Dr. Ferre with praising Marxism and advocating a world government. As a result, Faulkner waged a battle of three years' duration (ca. 1954-1957) in an attempt to have Ferre dismissed from Vanderbilt's faculty. Correspondence in the Ferre file is largely between Faulkner, Vanderbilt Chancellor Harvie Branscomb, and board of trustees member, V.J. Alexander. Additional correspondence is with Sherman Adams (assistant to President Dwight Eisenhower) and Hattiesburg citizen, F.W. Foote.
