Form of Material:
An assortment of items
relating to Mississippi's first governor, David Holmes (1817-1820). Mr.
Holmes was also the last territorial governor (1809-1817), and the fifth
governor of the state (Jan. 7 - July 25, 1926). Failing health forced
Gov. Holmes to resign after serving only six months of his second term.
A native of York County, Pennsylvania, Holmes' family moved to Virginia
during his childhood. He returned to Virginia in 1826, and died there
on August 28, 1832. He is interred in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester,
Virginia.
In 1943, Delta Shipbuilding Company, New Orleans, Louisiana, built a Liberty
Ship named the David Holmes, which was launched August 14, 1943. After
changing hands (and names) several times, the ship was scrapped in 1967
at Mukaijima, Japan.
