Collection Title: Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Association Records

Press Release:

HATTIESBURG CIVIC LIGHT OPERA MATERIALS DONATED TO USM
July 22, 1997

A growing collection of all kinds of materials that document the history of the Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Association from its founding in 1976 to its 1997 season has been donated by current and past officers and members of the HCLO to the Department of Manuscripts and Archives in the McCain Library and Archives of the USM University Libraries.

Current HCLO President Mr. Tim Breland and Secretary Ms. Jacque Purdy James presented USM Archivist Dr. Bobs Tusa with programs from past productions, newspaper clippings, and handbills when she spoke to the HCLO board meeting on June 26 at the invitation of past President Mr. Garland Sullivan.

Ms. James also donated lists of HCLO productions with names of cast members and directors and officers of the Association, and Mr. Sullivan donated HCLO materials from his personal collection.

In a separate donation, Mrs. Martha Tatum, founding member and first Vice President of the HCLO, gave to the USM Archives several scrapbooks of color photographs of HCLO live performances which she had kept over the years.

The Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Association was founded in 1976 by Mr. Bob Mesrobian as a volunteer community performing group. Its first production was "The Barber of Seville," performed on the stage of the Thames School Auditorium. The organization was instrumental in the restoration of the Saenger Theatre, where many of its performances are held.

Now in its twenty-second year, the HCLO continues to enjoy the support of the community.
