Collection Title: Balfour (Jeff) Collection Press Release: June 17, 1996 Mr. Jeff Balfour of Purvis has donated to the department of Manuscripts and Archives in the McCain Library and Archives of the USM University Libraries a large collection of photographs and slides which he has taken over the past thirty years of people, places, and activities in many localities throughout the state of Mississippi. The collection records many images of rural activities which are no longer generally practiced, such as using ox teams to drag cut timber through pine forests, plowing with mule teams, killing hogs in the autumn, and making syrup. Especially well documented are the many activities on the Vick Anderson farm near Brooklyn. There are also photographs and slides of Parchman Penitentiary prisoners working with horse-drawn plows, workboats on the Mississippi River, and buildings and street scenes in towns such as Abbeville, Bay Springs, Enterprise, Lamar, Paulding, and Ramsey Springs. Mississippi railroads are also well represented. Photographs of Hattiesburg in the 1950's include several views of the downtown area, the Dixie Pines Products Company buildings, and the USM campus, including the Dixie Darlings performing at the half-time of a night football game. Mr. Balfour, an excellent cameraman, kept his camera loaded in his truck and took photographs wherever he went. The collection includes negatives, positive prints, regular 2"x2" slides, larger slides made with a Hasselblad camera, and picture postcards.
