Press Release:

MISSISSIPPI AUTHOR JOHN ARMISTEAD DONATES LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS TO USM ARCHIVES
August 15, 1996

Tupelo resident John Armistead, author of the Sheriff Grover Bramlett mystery novels, has donated to the department of Manuscripts and Archives in the McCain Library and Archives of the USM University Libraries the manuscripts and related papers of his three novels Legacy of Vengeance (1994), A Homecoming for Murder (1995), and Cruel as the Grave (1996).

Armistead's novels have won praise from critics for their local color, sound characterization, and strong plot. They are described as carefully crafted and fast paced. His novels take place in a small town in northeast Mississippi, where the local sheriff uncovers the murderer after finding his way through various personal and family secrets.

The author says that as he was writing his most recent novel Cruel as the Grave, the identity of the murderer changed. This change is documented in the several drafts of the manuscript included in the USM gift.

Armistead is a graduate of Mississippi College and The University of Mississippi. He is a Baptist minister and Religion Editor of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal of Tupelo, where he lives with his wife and two sons. His hobby is tinkering with his Harley-Davidson Sportster.

He is in Hattiesburg today to read from his books and to sign autographs at Ye Olde Book Shoppe. On his way to the bookstore, he stopped at the USM Archives to deliver his manuscripts and papers. The USM Archivist Dr. Bobs Tusa noted that a copy of Armistead's first novel Legacy of Vengeance, which is no longer in print, was provided by Dr. Walter Wicker, co-owner of Ye Olde Book Shoppe, so that the Armistead collection would be complete.

Armistead is currently at work on his next novel, tentatively titled "Babylon's Reward" and scheduled for publication next summer.
