Description
2nd Floor South, in Cook Library, contains current journals, state, national and international newspapers, government documents and map collection, videos/dvds/films and the microform collection.
Collections
Journals
Journals in 2nd Floor South generally consist of the most current year. Generally, journals do not circulate. However, faculty (faculty ID card required) may check out journals for two hours. Unbound periodicals are checked out at the Information Services desk. Graduate assistants may check out journals on behalf of a faculty member if they have the faculty member's USM ID card.
A faculty copier is available for faculty use. A department code is required for the faculty copier.
Media
Media in 2nd Floor South consist of videocassettes, DVD’s, laser discs, compact audio discs, audiocassettes, and slides. A variety of equipment is available to support use of the collection. DVD and VHS players are available for checkout. Additional listening and viewing equipment is available for use in-house. Checkout times for faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students are fourteen days. Media items can be renewed through ANNA but not over the phone or through email.
Microform
The Cook Library has large holdings in microform (microfilm, microfiche, and opaque microcard). These include past issues of newspapers and journals, ERIC documents, and books. Many significant collections are available, such as “Selected Americana from Sabin’s Dictionary of Books Relating to America,” “Three Centuries of English and American Plays,” “Travels in the Confederate States, American Women’s Diaries, Southern Women,” “Papers of the NAACP,” and many more.
Newspapers
University Libraries subscribe to a variety of state, national, and international newspapers. Two to three months of print versions are available in 2nd Floor South, on the newspaper shelves. Older issues can be found on microform or online.
USM Government Publications Collection
2nd Floor South houses the USM Government Publicaions and map collection (print, microform, and CD-rom). University Libraries collect selected federal publications distributed by the Government Printing Office (GPO). We are one of 11 Federal Depository Libraries located throughout the state of Mississippi. As a Selective Depository, the library receives roughly half of the government publications distributed by the GPO.
Equipment
Microform Equipment
2nd Floor South has several microform reader/printers for use with microfiche or microfilm and one for use with microopaque or microcards. In addition, one microfilm/microfiche reader is attached to a computer providing the ability create digital copies that can be saved, e-mailed, or printed. All the microform printers use the library’s copy card system to pay for printing..
Media Equipment
2nd Floor South has a small lab with the necessary equipment for viewing or listening to all materials in its collection. The larger equipment is not available for checkout. However, there are portable DVD players and a VHS/DVD combo unit that are available for checkout.
Technology-Enhanced Study Room The room is located on the second floor of Cook Library, in room 209D. A 42-inch LCD monitor is mounted to the wall and a wireless keyboard and mouse are available for check-out. The computer has Internet access and the same software as other library computers, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Computers
2nd Floor South has several computers with internet access and the complete Microsoft Office suite. All computers are available for searching the library catalog and other bibliographic databases.
