1. Are genealogy books available for check-out?

Yes. Genealogy materials circulate.

2. Do I need a USM I.D. to use the library?

No, not to view materials or make copies. But a USM I.D. or Alumni card is required to check materials out of the library. There are also other services limited to current students, faculty and staff.

3. Where are the genealogy books?

Some genealogy books are located in Cook Library and some in McCain Library and Archives (the building south of Cook Library).

In McCain Library:
Mississippi-related genealogy books are located in the Brooks Reading Room (305).

Note: McCain Library hours of operation are Monday thru Friday 8-5.

Photocopier does not accept change or copy cards; Pay at the reference desk with cash or a check.

In Cook Library: Genealogy books NOT clearly related to Mississippi (unless they are duplicate titles of those housed in McCain Library), are shelved in the STACKS of Cook Library.

list of holdings

Call numbers (like CS71 .M98 1993) determine where in Cook Library a particular book will be shelved. For example, Early Myers in United States, is in the 2nd floor stacks area. Click here for a floor guide.

Note: Printed guides to Cook Library's physical layout are available in the lobby and at various service points.

4. Where are the genealogy periodicals?

Current (this year's) genealogy periodicals are shelved in 2nd Floor South of Cook Library.

Non-current genealogy periodicals are shelved in the STACKS or are located on microform in the Reading Room of Cook Library.

5. Where are the census records?

Microfilmed Census Records for Mississippi and other states are housed in the READING ROOM on the 2nd floor of Cook Library. Labels clearly describe the census materials contained in each drawer. Search the online catalog for holdings.

6. How do I look up genealogy materials?

Search ANNA, the online catalog from any public computer in the library or remotely via the Internet at http://anna.lib.usm.edu. If patrons wish to LIMIT their searching to only materials classified as GENEALOGY, they may follow instructions below:

From the University of Southern Mississippi Libraries homepage http://www.lib.usm.edu/ click the link for ANNA>CATALOG at the top of the page.

Click ADVANCED SEARCH next to the search box.

Find ITEM CATEGORY1, click on the black down arrow and select [GENEALOGY] from the list. Now go up to the top search box and enter your search terms (such as South Carolina, Byrd family, or pensions).

Note: Item Category1 designations clear out with every search.

7. I have the call number, now where do I go in Cook Library?

Here is a floor directory for call numbers in Cook:

8. Where do I make photocopies?

In Cook Library:
Photocopy machines are located on every floor of Cook Library. All photocopiers accept copy cards. Copy cards may be purchased from machines on the first floor. The card itself costs one dollar. Add money to the card to use for photocopies. A few machines will accept change/bills.

Microfilm/fiche copiers are available.

In McCain Library:
Photocopiers do not take cards or change. Pay for all copies at the reference desk (cash, check).

9. How much do photocopies cost?

Photocopies cost $.10 per page.

10. I do not live in the area, are there genealogy researchers I can contact to find what I need in your libraries?

Yes. A few local individuals provide, for a fee, genealogical services. Contact via email for the list of names and contact information.

11. If I call, write, or email the library, will someone search books, periodicals or microfilm for information that I need?

The University Library lacks the staff, time and resources to conduct research for off-site patrons. Library personnel are able to direct patrons to the online catalog and to the physical location of genealogy materials.

12. Are genealogy books available through Interlibrary Loan?

Genealogy materials are not sent out on Interlibrary Loan, but if off-site patrons request copies of pages, chapters, indices, and other portions of books, they may obtain copies through their local library's ILL service.
