The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries will host a talk about Mississippi’s timber industry materials found in Special Collections on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Cook Library Art Gallery (LIB 105A), located next to Starbucks.

Special Collections at the University of Southern Mississippi preserves and makes accessible a number of significant archival collections documenting the history of the region’s timber industry. Steve Haller, the curator of historical manuscripts and archives at Southern Miss, will provide a brief summary of selected timber industry collections highlighting three newly available collections. In his talk, “Piney Woods and Pine Belts: Archival Resources Document Mississippi’s Timber Industry,” Haller will review the types of materials in the collection and showcase a number of original manuscripts and photographs in his presentation.

This talk is the first of three presentations on collecting areas in Special Collections at Southern Miss. The following talks will focus on the children’s literature collection and civil rights materials. All events are sponsored by Special Collections and The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County. The talks are made possible by the Mississippi Library Leadership Institute conducted by the Mississippi Library Commission and funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
