University Libraries is pleased to announce the return of 19th Century Masterfile to our list of subscription databases. Paratext’s 19th Century Masterfile provides patrons with the opportunity to search the indexes of British and American periodicals published in the 1800s. Some indexing reaches into the 20th century. The cornerstone of 19th Century Masterfile, Poole’s Index to Periodical Literature, runs from 1802-1906. The children’s magazine St. Nicholas offers indexing from 1873-1928. For a complete list of indexes, click the dropdown menu on the Source field on the Advanced Search screen.

Index databases such as 19th Century Masterfile allow researchers to identify where and when articles on various topics were published in periodical literature. Paratext has integrated into the database links to the articles themselves by connecting to the digital content housed in other databases such as Making of America, HathiTrust, and JSTOR. Also included in the redesigned 19th Century Masterfile are links to the digital images found in ARTstor.
