Special Collections Exhibit: Cover Art of Mid-century Children’s Books on Space
Interest in the space-inspired aesthetics are as popular now as they were in the 1950s when the Space Age began. From fashion to interior design, consumers were inundated with furnishings and dresses that would be right at home in your house on Mars. This trend can also be seen in children’s book cover designs.
Spaced Out: The Atomic Age of Children’s Book Cover Design highlights examples of book jackets and covers from children’s books published primarily from the 1940s-1960s. This exhibit, curated by Jennifer Brannock, includes favorites featuring the Jetsons and Space Ghost to lesser known titles like The Green Man from Space and The Russians in Space.
Spaced Out: The Atomic Age of Children’s Book Cover Design will be on display on the third floor of McCain Library and Archives until November 1, 2018. For additional information, contact Jennifer Brannock at Jennifer.Brannock@usm.edu or 601.266.4347.
