This event has been canceled.

Science Café on the Coast will present “To Eat or Not to Eat: Food Deserts and Food Insecurity” on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. at Bay St. Louis Library.

Dr. Christine Coker, Mississippi State University Extension Service horticultural specialist, will discuss areas with limited access to affordable nutritious foods known as food deserts. She will explain how limited access to healthy foods has contributed to health problems in poverty-stricken areas and ways that communities have attempted to combat the deficiency.

Coker is an associate research and Extension professor of urban horticulture for Mississippi State University’s Extension Center in Biloxi. She is dedicated to teaching people to grow food – commercial vegetable production, home gardening, green roofs, and school and community gardens.

Science Café offers those with minimal background in science the opportunity to meet and discuss issues in a relaxed social setting and is a collaboration between The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Harrison County Library System, Long Beach Public Library, and Hancock County Library System.

Science Café is free and open to the public. Follow Science Café on the Coast on Facebook for upcoming events and live streaming by visiting Facebook.com/sciencecafeonthecoast.
