No Country for Old Men
by Cormac McCarthy PS 3653 .C337 N6 2005 Answer those burning questions you have about the film No Country for Old Men -- Was that really him, dead in the parking lot? What was that ending all about? – by reading Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name. No Country for Old Men is an elaborate chase story, a post-modern Western, and a lament over the state of humanity. Llwellyn Moss battles bandits and drug dealers and the blue-eyed psychopath Chigurh in his ambitious struggle to hang on to the two million dollars he discovered in a bloody desert crime scene. It will take a little longer to read the book than to watch the movie, but not by much. Suspense keeps the pages flying as McCarthy drops down quick, clear sentences in a departure from the more complicated, round-about style he uses other novels. Speaking of his other novels, check out The Road (PS 3653 .C337 R632006) before the movie appears this Fall in movie theaters. - Peggy Price ![]() New Spring by Robert Jordan PS 3560 .O7617 N49 2004 If you finish this book feeling like there is more to the story, that’s because there is. New Spring was intended to be one of three prequels to the Wheel of Time series, but Robert Jordan succumbed to cardiac amyloidosis before he could begin work on the other two novels. New Spring might appear to be your standard fantasy novel at first glance, but RJ takes a common theme and makes it his own. Whatever you think you know about wizards, knights, and evil dark lords is sure to be challenged at every turn. Lord of the Rings, this is not. At a little over three hundred pages, this novel is an easy read that offers a window into the main characters’ history. If you enjoy New Spring, make sure to check out Jordan’s The Eye of the World (PS3560.O7617 E94 1990) for your next escape. - John Blair **All books are found in the Popular Reading Collection located on the first floor of Cook Library.
