Cook Library Hours Extended

Cook Library is expanding its’ service hours by keeping the Information Services area on the first floor open routinely until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday—an addition of ten hours a week. We hope that the campus community will be pleased with this expansion of computing and research services in Cook Library.

Changes in Cook Library

University Libraries are pleased to announce some changes that occurred in Cook Library during the semester break.

A partnership with iTech has incorporated the computing resources previously located in the iTech computer lab in room 105A into the Information Services area on the first floor of Cook Library. A total of 171 computers are now available, including six workstations with assistive technology (as recommended by ODA), six flatbed scanners, and five Macintosh computers.

All computer users in Cook Library will now be required to login prior to using the equipment. Currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff will login using their Campus ID user name and password—the same login used to access SOAR, Blackboard, and e-mail.

Library users will also notice that the current newspapers and current periodicals collections have been moved from 2nd Floor South to Information Services. The newspapers are now located at the south end of the first floor and the current periodicals (journals and magazines) are located at the start of the reference collection.

Expansion of Computing and Research Services in Cook Library

The University Libraries and iTech are working to enhance computing and research support for students, faculty and staff. On Saturday, Dec. 12, the current Cook Library Computer Lab (Room 105A next to Starbucks) will be closed. The furniture and equipment from this area will be incorporated into the Information Services department (Room 109) on the first floor of Cook Library. The infrastructure to support first-rate computing equipment and Internet connectivity will be upgraded during the following two weeks and will be fully functional by Tuesday, Jan. 19. Throughout this time, the Information Services department in Cook Library will be open.

After Jan. 19, the Information Services department will routinely extend its open hours from midnight to 2 a.m., thus making more study space, computing and research support available to students, faculty and staff during these hours.

Children’s Book Preview

The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection invites you to take a sneak peek at what’s new in children’s literature. Each year at the Book Preview, the de Grummond Collection displays hundreds of newly released and upcoming titles for the public to browse. There is no pressure to buy because many of these books are not yet available for sale. This is a great opportunity for teachers and librarians to get ideas for book selections for their classrooms and general collection development. It is also an opportunity for parents to get ideas for books to purchase for holiday gift giving. All visitors will receive a book list with publication and ordering information.

This year’s event will be held in the de Grummond exhibit room on the second floor of Cook Library on Sunday, Nov. 15, 1 - 5 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 16, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Miles to Sign New Book at Gulf Park Campus Library

A book signing will be held at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus library with local author Terry I. Miles Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 1 – 3 p.m. on the first floor of the library.

Miles, an accomplished actress in coast community theater, is the author of nine books in the Cozy Little Murder Mysteries series. She will sign copies of “Girls of the Garden Club,” the next book in the series.

Light refreshments will be provided and the first seven customers to purchase a book will receive a free “Girls of the Garden Club” coffee mug. For more information, call 228.214.3450.

Two Additional Technology–Enhanced Study Rooms Available in Cook Library

Cook Library is pleased to announce the availability of two additional technology-enhanced group study rooms. Each room has a 43-inch LCD monitor mounted to the wall, and a wireless keyboard and mouse available for check-out from the Circulation Desk. The computers have Internet access and the same software as other library computers, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The rooms are located in rooms 209D, 315, and 415. Use of these group study rooms is first come, first-served. Come in and try one for your next group project.

Information Kiosk at Cook Library

Summer Reading Program for Children of Southern Miss Students and Employees

University Libraries are hosting a summer reading program during the month of July for children of Southern Miss students, faculty, and staff. Children will be encouraged to read books from a provided list and at the conclusion of the program, prizes will be awarded based on number of books read. This program is a wonderful way for children to keep and improve their reading skills over the summer holiday.

The Curriculum Materials Center in Cook Library and the Curriculum Lab at the Gulf Coast Library are home to a wide array of children’s and young adult literature, textbooks, educational board games and kits, media, and more. Changes to Cook Library Reserves

In an effort to enhance the availability of reserve materials to students, Cook Library is making a change in the processing and handling of photocopied materials placed on Reserve. Beginning in the summer 2009 semester, all photocopies or PDF’s submitted for Reserves will be entered as an eReserve only, eliminating the processing of paper copies and eliminating the check out/in from the Circulation Desk. This change will allow students to access eReserves 24 hours a day, as well as reduce the supplies needed to process the paper copies and eliminate several staff processing steps. It also means that eReserves will be available to the students a bit sooner than in the past. The hard copy provided will be kept on file for the rare occasion that the integrated library system becomes unavailable.

University Libraries Announcement Regarding RefWorks

University Libraries regret to announce the University’s subscription to RefWorks (www.RefWorks.com) will not be renewed for fiscal year 2009/10. Access to the Web-based citation and bibliography management system will expire on June 30, 2009. Although the Libraries were excited to introduce this new service in 2008/09, RefWorks has been used by only 3% of the Southern Miss community. With apologies to individuals using RefWorks, the low level of usage does not warrant continued support of this service in this period of budget reductions.

Current users will be sent an e-mail message containing instructions for exporting citations from RefWorks. Users are advised to export their references before June 30, 2009, to avoid any loss of data. University Libraries will continue to offer technical assistance to users through the remainder of the subscription period. Technical assistance is also available directly from RefWorks.
