Collection Development Policy for Popular Reading

University Libraries Collection Development Policy for Specific Collections
Cook Library - Popular Reading Collection

Background information

In the summer of 2006, Cook Library established a collection of titles known as the 'Popular Reading Collection.' This collection is a response to input received from focus groups and satisfaction and assessment surveys taken by library users. The desire was expressed for the main library to have a circulating collection of fiction and non-fiction books available to satisfy patrons' casual reading interests.

The collection was started through the services of a rental vendor for maximum flexibility in both establishing a base collection and ease of exchanging titles as they lose their appeal and new ones come into demand. In addition, other titles will be purchased for the collection or added through the gifts program.

Selection

Titles selected for the Popular Reading Collection will be handled through the University Libraries Collection Development Program. These selections will meet the University's mission of providing a learning atmosphere for faculty, staff, and students that meets the needs of the whole person.

Location

The books will be placed in a designated area on the first floor of Cook Library. Some titles may eventually be moved to the regular stacks.

Circulation Period

The circulation period shall be 30 days for all patron categories and subject to other circulation policies for fines, renewals, holds, etc.

Scope

Adult level, fiction and non-fiction print materials intended for general interest reading and entertainment.

Funding

Funds for the support of both the rental collection and other purchased titles will come from the account into which fines and book sale proceeds are placed.
