Reading RoomDescription and Location
Located on the second floor of Cook Library, the Reading Room contains current journals, state, national and international newspapers, government documents and map collection, videos/dvds/films and the microform collection. Collections
Journals Journals in the Reading Room consist of the most current year. Journals do not circulate. However, faculty (must have faculty ID card) may check out journals for two hours. The items are checked out at the Reading Room desk. Graduate assistants may also check out journals if they have a letter on file (must be renewed each semester) from a faculty member. A faculty copier is available for faculty use. A department code is required for the faculty copier. Media Media in the Reading Room consist of videocassettes, DVD’s, laser discs, compact audio discs, audiocassettes, and slides. A variety of equipment is available in the Reading Room to support use of the collection. Media equipment is not available for checkout. Checkout times for faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students are fourteen days. Media items should be returned to the Reading Room desk as items are very fragile. Media items can be renewed through ANNA but not over the phone or through email. Microform The University Library has large holdings in microform (microfilm, microfiche and opaque microcard). These include past issues of newspapers and journals, ERIC documents and books. Many significant collections are available such as “Selected Americana from Sabin’s Dictionary of Books Relating to America,” “Three Centuries of English and American Plays,” “Travels in the Confederate States, American Women’s Diaries, Southern Women,” “Papers of the NAACP,” and many more. Newspapers University Libraries subscribe to a variety of state, national and international newspapers. The 2-3 months of print versions are available in the Reading Room on the newspaper shelves. Older editions can be found on microform or online. USM Government Documents Collection The Reading Room houses the USM Government Documents and map collection (print, microform, and cd-rom). University Libraries collect selected federal publications distributed by the Government Printing Office (GPO). We are one of 11 Federal Depository Libraries located throughout the state of Mississippi. As a Selective Depository, the library receives roughly half of the government publications distributed by the GPO. Reading Room Equipment
Microform Equipment The Reading Room has eight Minolta microfilm/microfiche reader/printers and an opaque card reader with attached printer. We also have two microfilm readers and two microfiche readers that do not have attached printers. All the microform machine printers require copy cards to print. Staff is available to help users who are unfamiliar with the equipment. Computers The Reading Room has eight computers with DVD player and the complete Microsoft Office suite. Six other computers are available for searching the library catalog and other bibliographic databases. Media Equipment The Reading Room has a small lab with the necessary equipment for viewing or listening to all materials in its collection. The equipment is not available for checkout. In addition, there are three portable DVD players and two VHS/DVD combo units available for checkout. Other Equipment A typewriter is available for use by patrons. It is located next to the Reading Room desk. Reading Room Services
Holds You may place a "hold" on an item that is already checked out if you would like to have it held for you when it is returned. Holds are queued up in the order that they are placed. A hold must be placed at the Reading Room desk. You will be notified by e-mail when the item is available after your hold has been placed. Holds can not be done over the phone or through e-mail. Only items that are already checked out can have holds placed on them. Booking Media Materials Media held in the Cook Library Reading Room may be booked in advance for a specific time and date. This is very useful if you need media materials for class presentations or screenings. You can also book items months in advance. Unlike placing a hold, which reserves library materials for use as soon as they become available, booking an item reserves it for a specified length of time and leaves it free for other patrons to use until that specified (booked) time period. We recommend that you try to book materials at least seven days in advance to allow checked-out materials to be returned on time for your booking. You may book your item online with our media booking form. For more information, please see our media booking FAQ. Reserves Media items may be placed on reserve behind the Reading Room desk for student’s in-house use or to be checked out for a three-hour period or overnight. These shortened checkout times keep the items available for a large number of students since no one can have it for a lengthy time. We have a media lab and small group study rooms available where students can watch or listen to media in the library. A Reserve form will need to be filled out. This form is available online through the library Web site or you can obtain a print copy at the Reading Room desk. Document Delivery Gulf Park media loan requests are facilitated through Document Delivery. Satellite There are many programs available by satellite that can be used for professional development, instruction and training. One of the providers of educational satellite teleconferences is the Annenberg Channel. This source has many free educational programs that are available for downlinking and taping. If you would like to request that a program be taped for use with a class or to be added to the library’s collection please fill out the online form. Information about the Annenberg channel and a list of available programs can be accessed at http://www.learner.org/channel/channel.html. Media Borrowing/Circulation Policy
