Biographical Sketch

Betsy Lewin was born May 12, 1937 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania to John and Winifred Reilly. She studied art at the Pratt Institute of Art and received a Bachelor's of Fine Art degree in 1959. She now lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband Ted Lewin, who is also an author and illustrator. Ms. Lewin has illustrated for her own stories as well as for other authors.

Scope and Content

Cat Count (1981) was originally a poem written and illustrated by Ms. Lewin for Humpty Dumpty Magazine. An editor at Dodd, Mead & Company suggested that she expand it into a picture book. The collection contains a copy of the original poem found in Humpty Dumpty Magazine, an original dummy with ink sketched illustrations, final original illustrations, master galley, master dust jacket, and a final dummy with paste-ups.
